Cosmetic Injections Part 2: Fillers & Volumizers

Age, genetics, and weight fluctuations often lead to volume loss in your face. This results in an overall sagging appearance with deepening folds, shadowing, and a tired or even “deflated” appearance. Using advanced injection techniques and the correct product(s), it is possible to replace lost volume, soften folds, reduce shadowing, and accentuate your most positive features! Unlike neurotoxins which work to relax muscles and smooth lines, injected filler actually occupies space in the soft tissue in order to replace volume, soften shadowing, etc. Thus, injectable filler works differently and has a totally different role than neurotoxins. Click here for more information on neurotoxin injections.

The most commonly used injectable fillers/volumizers are made of hyaluronic acid (or “HA”). Examples include Belotero®, Restylane®, Juvederm®, Perlane®, and Voluma®. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that is present throughout the body, especially in the skin. Manufacturing processes differ among the products, giving each unique qualities to best serve certain needs. For example, a filler that is thin, smooth, and flows freely from the syringe should be used in an area such as the tear troughs. However, in an area such as the cheeks or mid-face, a filler with more lifting ability and thickness would be ideal.

Another excellent filler/volumizer called Radiesse® is comprised of a gel containing calcium hydroxylapetite microspheres similar to minerals naturally found in the body. In addition to simply filling and volumizing, Radiesse® has the unique ability to stimulate collagen. It is great for volumizing and looks particularly nice in the midface and cheek areas. Some of the most common areas that may be improved with fillers & volumizers:

  • Tear troughs (hollows under the eyes)

  • Midface – this includes cheeks, nasolabial folds, etc.

  • Temples

  • Corners of the mouth

  • Marionette lines

  • Jowls

  • Lips (rejuvenation, augmentation, or correction of asymmetry)

  • Chin augmentation – a wonderful alternative to a surgical chin implant!

  • Nonsurgical nose reshaping

  • Aging hands (Click here for more information of addressing aging hands).
